Protection - S.A. Reid, T. Baggins Gabriel is top dog at a men's prison in the 1930s, and Joey is a new inmate. Gabriel is immediately attracted to Joey and, because of Joey's crime, he feels justified in brutally raping Joey in the showers. When Joey gets back from his stay in the infirmary (where he had to get stitches!) he finds out that Gabriel has arranged to become Joey's cellmate. It's a harsh beginning and the brutality is not downplayed. Joey really hates Gabriel, but he learns he has to make compromises to survive, and there is a gradual warming between the two that is actually very sweet.

This novella is well paced and tightly plotted. I enjoyed the first two thirds more than the last third but then I always get a little bored once the couple become a couple, and I was invested enough in this pair to read through to the end in one sitting. Will look out for more by SA Reid.
