Luke's Brutal Abduction - The Whole Story

Luke's Brutal Abduction - The Whole Story - Brad Vance Free right now on Smashwords w code FW56S
Wallflower - Heidi Belleau I enjoyed this quite a lot. Easy and fun dialogue, what felt to me like a very realistic evolution of Rob's gender identity crisis, complete with doubts and insecurities, and good secondary characters. Rob and Dylan made a great couple. It had some darker moments, but for a serious topic, this was a surprisingly bright story.

Also, I've lived a few years in Vancouver and have a soft spot for stories set in that city. This story had a definite sense of place, was familiar with the character of the various neighborhoods, and true to the culture of the city.

I read this without reading the first of the series, Apple Polisher, and it was fine. Will be getting Apple Polisher now though.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy - Helen Fielding Because you can't trust an author once they kill off the Velveteen Rabbit.

Prince of Silk and Thorns

Prince of Silk and Thorns - Cherry Dare This book kinda snuck up on me. Early on I had it pegged as mostly porn - the writing is fairly simple and it is on the smutty side. But there's a story there as well, and the further I read, the better the story got, and the writing seemed to me to get better and better in the second half of the book too.

This is not really a darkfic, so much as an adventure story, with a slave, fallen angels, a militant church, and a prince battling for his crown against evil usurpers. Good fun, and very enjoyable.

Slave

Slave - Aaron Travis There's nothing of softness or tenderness about this story - it's just a relentlessly brutal torture-fic. Each punishment Jonas undergoes is worse than the last. But the execution of the story is quite well done, so if this is your thing, and you like your torture without the romance, you might like this.

btw, I recommend reading this without the forward. ymmv, but this writer's forwards always kinda annoy me, being rather a recounting of all the praise he's ever received for the story.

Kneel to Me

Kneel To Me - Lauren P. Burka, Argus Marks, Elizabeth Thorne, Jason Rubis, Jay Starre, Joe Nobel, Kannan Feng, Smotp Some of these stories felt a little incomplete, but almost all of them were memorable. On the whole, this is a better anthology than most others of this type that I've read. The stories span from mm to mf to ff.

Serve Me

Serve Me - Anna Hedley, Gabriel Belthir, Lor Rose, Fox Lee The first three stories were kind of blah. The last one, Takashima's Pet, was quite delightful.

I'm off to see what else Fox Lee has written..

blue light

blue light - Aaron Travis I think I would have liked this a lot more if it weren't for the rather smug and self-congratulatory author's note that preceded the story. I kept waiting for it to be as good as promised and consequently was doomed to disappointment.

Petar (The Matik Masters #4)

Petar (The Matik Masters #4) - J.C. Wells Even in M/F romances I'm annoyed by the use of "the male".

This book doesn't contain a single female character.

Yet every single character is either "the male" or "a male". All the time.

I've spoilered this example, but it comes at 17% of the story and doesn't give much away.

"Well you shouldn't have come either way," Petar said, looking away from the male as he came to crouch down at the edge of the pool.

Petar could see the male shake his head slowly out of the corner of his eye, a look of disbelief on his face. "Why do you constantly insist on such a thing? It is my duty as Medical Master that I see to it that you are in perfect health." He paused for a moment. "It is also my duty as a male."

Also, I couldn't get over the end-of-story sex - this is the happy sex! - where Zaa'er, who has somehow managed to penetrate Petar in his sleep, wakes up and starts fucking Petar but then decides he wants to come in Petar's mouth so he pulls out of Petar's ass and immediately pushes Petar's mouth down onto his cock. Ewwww.
